  10.               Ten  percent  of all Americans earn their livings in some way
  11.          associated with the automobile industry.

  13.               There are 127,000,000 cars in America.  Lined  up  bumper  to
  14.          bumper, they would circle the globe 18 times.

  16.               Every  eighteen  days  in 1989, America's automakers produced
  17.          enough new cars and trucks to line up  bumper-to-bumper  from  New
  18.          York to San Francisco.

  20.               General  Motors  produces  7  million  engines per year.  So,
  21.          every year, General Motors alone produces enough engines that  you
  22.          could  line  them  up  end-to-end  from one side of America to the
  23.          other.  Just the brand new vehicles produced  in  America  in  one
  24.          year, after being driven for one year will use as much gasoline as
  25.          would fill up every single house in Chicago.

  27.               While we are talking about cars, 90% of tires on the road are
  28.          underinflated. How are yours?

  30.               The  worlds  longest  limousine is 47 feet and has a built-in
  31.          swimming pool. It rents for $5,000 per day.

  33.               According to calculations made by the Insurance Institute for
  34.          Highway Safety, 550 of the 2485 deaths that happened on roads with
  35.          a 65 mph speed limit would not have happened if  the  speed  limit
  36.          was  still  55  mph.   Deaths  on  these  roads  was  up  34% over
  37.          1982-1986,  when  the  speed  limit  was  55.    Overall   traffic
  38.          fatalities were up only 1.5% on all roads.

  40.               Every  year nine million tons of salt are spread on the roads
  41.          in the northeastern United States for de-icing.

  43.               The toll for a large  industrial  ship  every  time  it  goes
  44.          through the Panama Canal (9 hour voyage) is $44,000.00.

  47.          higher death rate. Could it be that the noise  makes  them  crazy?
  48.          There  has  also  been  some  research  indicating  a higher birth
  49.          defects rate near airports.

  51.               Engineers at McDonnell-Douglas are working with a  new  means
  52.          of  making  sure  jumbo jets don't surprise people with structural
  53.          defects.   They  are  imbedding  fiber  optic  strands  into   the
  54.          materials  of which airplanes are made. When an airplane is built,
  55.          they will measure the amount of light that these fibers  transmit.
  56.          The  fibers  in  the plane will be re-examined periodically.  If a
  57.          microscopic crack develops, the fibers will transmit less light.

  59.               A newspaper reporter discovered that  41  commercial  airline
  60.          pilots  in  Minnisota  have had their car drivers licenses revoked
  61.          due to drunken driving, yet they are still flying jumbo jets.

  63.               The Volkswagen was originally  called  the  Strength-Through-
  64.          Joy-Wagon.

  66.               If  you  took all the Volkswagen beetles ever made, and lined
  67.          them up bumper-to-bumper, they could reach from New York  City  to
  68.          San  Francisco  and  back,  six times.  All Volkswagens ever built
  69.          have driven a total of from here to the sun (9 billion miles)  and
  70.          used  up  more  gasoline  than  it  would take to fill the biggest
  71.          football stadium.
